For those who haven’t known this yet, back in the old days, most of our skateboards are constructed from Maple wood. The sturdiness and flexibility give you extra stability and comfort while riding on your skateboard.
Usually, the Maple wood that is used to construct our skateboards come from the cold mountain in the North American region. In here, we have a really quick growing season. Which is why the trees often have closer and tighter rings. This ensures the rigidity of the wood as well as their durability, which is extremely important if you’re practicing skateboarding.
For all these reasons, Maple wood decks are loved by skateboarders from all over the world.
Maple Wood Deck Construction
To produce the finest maple wood decks for skateboarders, only the hardest part of the trees is used for the manufacturing. This would make sure that you have the sturdiest and durable boards. The woods are then sliced into thin rectangular veneers that we’ll be using to make skateboard decks.
To start making the decks, the worker will collect a certain amount of veneers and glue them on top of each other. Depending on the desired hardness and flexibility of the board, they can add or reduce the number of veneers being used.
After that, the chunks are rested and pressed with pressure to make sure that they’re properly glued and giving it the desired shape. This process would take at least 3 hours.
Once the veneers are pressed into a solid piece, we’ll then shape it so that they’ll look more like a skateboard deck. This is done by placing a finished deck on top and carving it shape on the wood. Then the worker would use the saw and give the deck its initial shape.
Now, the chunk starts to look like an actual skateboard, but it’s not done yet. The rough edges would need to be sand off to make them smooth. They also use a brusher to get rid of any rough fibers that are left.
Once it’s done, the deck would be taken to the painting room where they would first give it a layer of colorless primer to completely seal the wood. Next, they add a layer of lacquer which would result in a shiny and protective coating on your board.
The last process would be to add some graphics on your skateboard and they’ll be ready to use.
